Talk about the rock music that you love here!| Showbiz Kids - Steely Dan | | LOL. For months, and whenever I see anything about Paris Hilton I get this old song going through my head that I just can't get out. It was one by steely dan, written I think before Paris was born:Chorus:
While the poor people sleepin
With the shade on the light
While the poor people sleepin
All the stars come out at night
After closing time
At the guernsey fair
I detect the el supremo
From the room at the top of the stairs
Well Ive been around the world
And Ive been in the washington zoo
And in all my travels
As the facts unravel
Ive found this to be trueChorusThey got the house on the corner
With the rug inside
They got the booze they need
All that money can buy
They got the shapely bods
They got the steely dan t-shirt
And for the coup-de-gras
Theyre outrageousChorusShow biz kids making movies
Of themselves you know they
Dont give a f*lip* about anybody else
Chorus

| | Steely Dan | | Anyone know if they are together any more? I hear them on my local jazz station and kinda like them...enought to get a cd...any suggestions? | |
| | Bear with me here... | | This is probably a really, really insane question, but do you have any songs, singers, or music groups that you hate so much that either hearing them or seeing them literally leaves a bad taste in your mouth? I have a few.1.)Eric Clapton/every one of his songs2.)Steely Dan/every one of their songs3.)Stevie Ray Vaughn/every last one of his songs4.)The new school Bon Jovi music--if I wanted to listen to country music, I'd turn the radio dial to a country station5.)Blues music in general | |

I loved the blues at 10pm, they were great bands in from Canada, USA, especially New Orleans, and Chicago,...
| | I like listening to internet radio while I work, looking for a station | | that plays Jazz. I mean real jazz, not the "easy listening" that most stations play. It's very hard to find real jazz. Nowadays most stations play Steely Dan-Jazz?! No way. I hear soft rock mostly on stations that claim to be playing jazz. The kind I'm looking for has the jazzy beat, lots of sax and horns and guitar and drums, evokes that feeling of smokey clubs and rain pounding in dark alleys, the era of 1920-1960 or so. Do you know of any? | |
| | Rock & Roll? Hall of Fame? | | Madonna is going to be inducted. Now, if it was called the "Music Hall of Fame", or "American Pop Culture Hall of Fame", then (even though I can't stand any of the music Madonna has ever made), I'd say she not only deserves to be inducted, but should be listed among the top inducties. Her success and influence on her genre of music is well known and well documented. She has reached true "Fame" status, since even those who aren't into what she does, know who she is... but she isn't, has never been, and never has claimed to be "Rock & Roll" in any of it's subgenres. There have been others. Others I really like, but it's not supposed to be about "like and dislike", it's supposed to be about Rock! elton john was one of my first favorite musicians... he and Bernie Taupin have written a few Rock & Roll songs, but they've written a few country songs too, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a Pop act. Steely Dan I really like too, but Fagen and Becker themselves made a point of only using Jazz studio musicians... because they considered themselves Jazz.Joni Mitchel was inducted against her... | |
| | )2/22/08...What's in UR CD Player?... | | I go from one favorite song 2 the next...Do U? Just found a new fave, Steely Dan, "two against Nature" title track... I know, kinda silly, but I am interested in what everyone else is listening 2 these days...
Mondoh he is a Pop act. Steely Dan I really like too, but Fagen and Becker themselves made a point of only using Jazz studio musicians... because they considered themselves Jazz.Joni Mitchel was inducted against her will. When she was nominated, she talked about how stupid it is or a folk singer to be included in a museum for Rock musicians. In fact, if you played folk music back in the 60s and anyone ever heard of you outside your own hometown, you are probably in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. There are some who "crossed over" from non Rock & Roll genres to play Rock and made it to the top, so sure, people like Bob Dylan, The Byrds and Van Morrison can feel comfortable with their place in Rock & Roll history, but what did Woodie Guthrie do that was even CLOSE to Rock & Roll? No, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has just become little more than a non telivision version of "The Grammy Awards". The 500 people who get to vote on...
| | Who are the greatest songwriter/performers of all time? | | I'm asking about the greatest songwriters who also successfully performed their material. So this eliminates names like Burt Bacharach or Oscar/Hammerstein, even though they wrote excellent songs. Elvis wrote some of his material, and he would be near the top of the list because he was such an excellent performer. On the other hand, Paul McCartney and John Lennon are near the top because they were so prolific and ingenious at writing, even though they rate no where near Elvis in performance. So, here is my short list - the Beatles (McCartney-Lennon-Harrison), Led Zeppelin (Page-Plant), Sting, Steely Dan (Fagen-Becker), Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, Pink Floyd (Waters-Gilmore), John Denver, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Vince Gil, Allison Kraus, Eric Clapton, James Taylor (and his ex-wife - name escapes me), Rush (Getty Lee), Ambrosia (don't know the names of the writers, but love their music), Supertramp (ditto), Fleetwood Mac (McVie, Nicks, Buckingham), Earl Thomas Conley, Willie Nelson, the Doobies, and Bob Wills. | |
